Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. Afeworki Woldemichael signing the release form with Berhane Debesai Abraha explaining that the release form is for the interview to be included in a digital collection, digital exhibit, and kept physically in the archives at Utah State University Library. Picture was taken at the kitchen table (moved into the living room) in Afeworki’s apartment in Logan, UT on May 17, 2015. He wants people to know that his wife and two children (boys ages 2 and 4) are still in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. He seemed pleased with being interviewed. He wants to speak English well so he can comunicate with the people in Cache Valley.

He moved to Cache Valley to work at a meat processing factory called JBS or Millers. His wife and two boys (ages 2 and 4 as of May 17, 2015) are still in a refugee camp in Africa. Afeworki gave Hilary the glass of orange juice that can be seen on the table. The research teach moved the kitchen table in the living room for more room. Heidi, the photographer is sitting on the single-person leather couch chair that Afeworki moved closer to the table.

An account of the resource
Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities.
