Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Created in France during the late fifteenth century, the illuminations, text, and family genealogy (added by one of many owners) found in De Villers Book of Hours make it an excellent example among other French books of hours from this period. In addition to acting as a repository of the style and iconography of French fifteenth-century illumination, the book's rich decorative program and varied textual content provide a remarkable document of contemporary devotional piety. This thesis provides the first detailed description and analysis of the De Villers Book of Hours. Following a description of books of hours in general, the overall make-up of the De Villers Hours is addressed, including the decorative program with a suggested method and example for description, a sample of textual transcription, comments on the provenance, a brief description of the family genealogy, and a concluding section with a sample collection register and worksheet for cataloging.

Description
An account of the resource
A history of grazing in Logan Canyon by Lysle R. English. Report No. 1 submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in History, Plan B, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, 1971.
With the rapid increase in population, renewed emphasis has been placed on conservation of our existing natural resources. The Forest Service has been charged with the responsibility of managing multiple use resources in the National Forests. Among the oldest, and in the early years of western development, most abused resources, are those of forage and watershed. This report has been written in an effort to provide a better understanding of the problem associated with control and management of the grazing assets of the Logan River drainage. In order to better appreciate a history of grazing in Logan Canyon, it is necessary to review some of the major events which preceded the actual grazing in the canyon. Although grazing records prior to the establishment of Cache National Forest are scarce, since 1906 the Forest Service has kept detailed grazing records. The wealth of material in the Logan District Ranger Office was made available through the courtesy of Merrill Roberts, Logan District Ranger. These records include allotment records and individual files on each permittee with current grazing rights. After a permit is terminated the records are maintained in the local office for ten years, then retired to the Denver office. For this report no effort was made to secure permittee records outside the local area.

The wasters and destoyers : community sponsored predator control in early Utah Territory by Victor C. Sorensen. A Plan B. Paper submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Science in History, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, 1992.
This is a study of two community sponsored predator hunts which took place during the early settlement of Utah, one in the Salt Lake Valley, and another in Cache Valley. The purpose of this study is to give a narrative of the hunts, to explain why they took place, and to explore why they were carried out in a particular fashion. In almost any historical event, multiple factors contribute to create and give meaning to what has happened. In the case of these hunts, factors ranging from survival to hatred of predatory animals must be considered.

Nature's Second Course: Water Culture in the Mormon Communities of Cache Valley, Utah, 1860-1916 by Kathryn T. Morse. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, 1992.
Nineteenth-century Mormon settlers in Utah combined a unique set of religious beliefs with a fervent agrarianism and a strong sense of community. They encountered a specific arid environment along the Wasatch Front. A distinctive cultural set of irrigation institutions and practices developed out of the complex interchanges between nature and culture in Cache Valley, Utah, between 1860 and 1916. The structure of water flow, and conflicts over water rights and responsibilities, reflected the fundamental tensions within Mormon communities between individual gain and collective progress; it also reflected the patriarchal essence of Mormon culture. The season-to-season workings of irrigation institutions that distributed water from the Logan River, whether large irrigation districts or neighborhood canal cooperatives, showed how Mormon communities developed systems of exchange for water that allowed each individual irrigator to take water in direct proportion to the amount of labor, cash, or crops he contributed to the group's collective construction and upkeep of canals. The democratic nature of these exchanges, however, were tempered by natural hierarchies inherent in the geography of water canals, and by community hierarchies of power. A small group of elite town fathers held most of the responsibility for irrigation administration, and used their influence -in disputes over water. Those town fathers also tended to own more land than other irrigators. They often owned valuable land in proximity to the canals themselves. Between settlement in 1860 and the Call Decree in 1916, Logan River irrigators worked together to formulate a water distribution system that allowed for both the growth of local communities and for continued adherence to the basic religious principles on which the communities were founded. They also struggled to follow seasonal cycles of water use that fit within the natural cycles of the rise and fall of the water level in the river. Whether at the level of the high-line canal, the city block, or the family garden, Mormon water systems constituted an interesting example of the ways in which culture and the environment come together to shape natural resource use, especially in the arid regions of the American west.

History of Water Resources Development in the Bear River Basin of Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming by R. Scott Wrenn. M.S. thesis by R. Scott Wrenn, submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in History, Utah State University, 1973. Typewritten, 127 single-sided pages. Includes tables and maps. Also includes R. Scott Wrenn's vita.
This paper examines the historical process of water resources development in the Bear River Basin and is based on the thesis that the attitudes of Bear River water users towards development reduce to a concern over the scarcity of water or the potential shortage of water. This concern has been a constant and primary focus of water resources development in the Bear River Basin even as water resources technology became increasingly more sophisticated and the legal and political consideration of water resource development became more complex. From the time of the original Mormon settlements in the Bear River Basin Water resource development in the basin has gone through several periods, each marked by the necessity for larger aggregations of capital and increased technical skill. Each of these developments has been met with distrust until the developer was able to convince the water users of his concern for an adequate water supply for basin water users.

A History of Timber Resource Use in the Development of Cache Valley, Utah by Douglas M. Bird. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Wildland Resources, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, 1964.
It has long been realized that the forests and forest products contributed very significantly toward the economic development of the Western United States. However, the extent of this contribution over a relatively small area has never been fully analyzed. Therein lies the primary justification for this paper. The author hopes that the readers of this paper will, through their reading, gain some appreciation of the major role the forest and its products played in the development of the western community.... There are several important questions that this study should try to answer. Among these are: What products were most widely taken from Cache Valley's forests? Which geographical areas were the most heavily logged and for what reasons? To what extent did the early forests contribute to the economic well-being of the early communities? To what extent have these forests been depleted and what were the principle causes of this depletion? These questions and many more are to be answered, though some more completely than others.

A Management Study of the Cache Elk Herd by Norman V. Hancock. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Wildlife Management, Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, Utah, 1955.
The present study was undertaken to acquire additional management information for both the North and South Cache units. It was recognized that effectiveness of elk management could be increased if such information were available as population data, age composition figures, effectiveness of the winter feeding program, herd productivity and mortality, summer and winter distribution, and the inter-specific role of deer and domestic livestock with the elk. The present study was commenced during late fall of 1951. Formal field work continued through the spring of 1953, though limited field work extended through the early 1954 winter. The study has been dedicated to the procurement of elk management information on both the North and South Cache units.
