Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. An account of the resource
Ya He Ma, a Burmese Muslim refugee from the Mae Sot Thailand refugee camp talks about living and working in Mae Sot, violence in the camp, applying for immigration to the United States, arrival in Salt Lake City, Utah, working with caseworkers and aides from the Salt Lake City mosque, working at JBS Miller (both she and her husband Ka Ma Din are employed there), Har Be Bar�s role as translator in the family, and life in America. Ya He Ma�s son Maung Maung and daughter Har Be Bar were in the front room during the interview. Her husband Ka Ma Din joined part way through the interview. Her daughter Fareda was in her bedroom until the interview concluded and we took pictures of the family.

He discusses his journey as a refugee, first in Malta, and the process to eventually come to the United States. Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. Dr. Geddes was the first head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, developed this program at USU, has been active through the years in cooperatives, especially Ag. Cooperatives in Ut., speaks of the history of USU, of educational philosophy, of the importance of cooperatives, and of his activities in the cooperative program since his retirement from USU. He is now in his late 80's.--A second interview on side B on 2/14/74 (25 minutes) on LDS Church Power System. Interviewer John Stewart. Took place in the Hatch Room, Library, USU. 5.31 minutes.;

Others Present: His wife and Beth James--Mr. Anderson, a native of Sanpete county and early day farmer in Emery county, has a keen recollection of settlements in eastern Utah and of early farming efforts and methods. He recounts the family's move from Sanpete to Emery and the difficulties of producing crops on the rather barren soil there. Mentions his corporation with and appreciation for the first USU county agricultural agent there, Robert H. Stewart, and the fact that many farmers failed to cooperate and adopt improved farming methods. Interviewer John Stewart. Took place at Mr. Anderson's home in Provo. 4.54 minutes.;
