SDS stands for Students for a Democratic Society, a radical student organization of the 1960's. Primarily concerned with equality, peace, and participatory democracy this group initially utilized methods of peaceful protest but resorted to an "any means necessary" policy with the onslaught of the Vietnam War.
This group produced many buttons over the years, which served as a constant voice of protest in addition to being a means of group identification.
