This is a drawing depicting the treatment of slaves in the late 16th and early 17th century on the island of Hispaniola. Slaves from Guinea dug in the silver mines for the Spanish in Hispaniola. Slaves were forced to work for their European masters in harsh conditions with little regard to the worker's lives.
