"Miles to Go Before I Sleep"
(or Miles I Go to Get a Haircut)
Miles Traveled - Earth to Moon
Tracking the miles I traveled to get a haircut from my home to the specific barbershop is quite revealing. Many miles have been traveled in personal automobiles, rental cars and/or airplanes. The miles are calculated as if I drove from my home to the barbershop destination. The following summarizes the distances traveled in the United States and how this mileage would compare to other potential "road trips" from a Point A to a Point B:
- Total one way mileage to date: 119,450
- Total round trip mileage to date: 238,901
- Miles traveled the distance from Canada to Mexico: 1,650 = 145 times
- Miles traveled the distance from West Coast to East Coast: 2,802 = 85 times
- Miles traveled the distance from the farthest southwest point of the country to the farthest northeast point: 3,395 = 70 times
- Miles traveled the distance from the farthest northwest point of the country to Key West, the southeast point: 3,561 = 67 times
- North Pole to South Pole, a distance of 8,595 miles = 28 times
- Around the World, a distance of 24,901 miles = 10 times
- One way trip to the Moon, a distance of 238,900 miles = 1 trip
All That Wander
As a teenager traveling with my family in the Northwest, I remember passing a slow moving, dirty, yet colorfully painted Volkswagen bus. Those were the days of the hippies, San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district, and "flowers in your hair." On the rear bumper of the bus was a bumper sticker that read, "All that wander are not lost." I remember having a subtle revelation thinking I was one of them, a wanderer. Over the years, I have visited all 50 states and have explored multiple roads and regions in most of them. The following summarizes these travels:
- Visited all 50 states plus the District of Columbia
- Lived for a time in the following states: Utah, Idaho, Ohio, Colorado, Kansas, and Montana
- Traveled to Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand
- Personally have had haircuts in 40 states plus the District of Columbia
- Haircuts in 281 barbershops
- Haircuts in 203 different cities
- Haircuts in 146 different counties
- Haircuts in 3 countries: USA, Mexico, and New Zealand
