Talking to America: Iranian Communities in Southern California: Anti-Islamic Republic Rally
Anti-Islamic Republic Rally, Wilshire Blvd., LA
Iranian monarchists (proponents of the former royal family of Iran that was ousted after the 1979 revolution) hold a rally in Los Angeles in opposition to the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI).
Starting from the Federal Building in front of TV cameras and accompanied by a few Iranian-American celebrities, the rally continues down Westwood Blvd., better known as Tehrangeles, while the protesters chant anti-IRI and pro-Trump slogans.
The Farsi sign in the crowd reads “Neither Ghaza, Nor Lebanon. I give my life only for Iran.” This is a common rally slogan in opposition to the Islamic Republic’s support for religious causes in other—mainly Arab—countries.
Trump is admired among some exiled Iranians in the US who believe his administration's policies against Iran (such as getting the US out of the Obama-negotiated nuclear deal) would lead to the eventual demise of the Islamic Republic.
Many Iranian immigrants have been demanding the US government to take strong military action against Iran, and they saw the possibility for that in the 45th administration.
The pre-revolutionary flag with the Lion and Sun symbol (which was repudiated by the Islamic Republic after the 1979 Revolution) is often used by Iranian communities in exile as a symbol of opposition to the Islamic Republic.
At this rally, this version of the Iranian flag is carried along with the American flag, sometimes superimposed on each other.
