ENGL 6750, Summer 2015: Voices: Karen Refugees in Cache Valley, Utah: Meet Some of the Karen Refugees in Cache Valley

How do you pronounce Karen?

The Karen refugees featured in this project traveled from the Karen State in Burma and crossed the Thai border into the Thailand refugee camps. From the refugee camps, they came to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then settled in Cache Valley, Utah. This entire process took years.

Tun Lay is a 61-year-old husband and father who works at JBS. He is very passionate about religion, and enjoys living in the United States.

Aye Win is a stay at home mother to four boys. She currently resides in Logan, Utah.

Kyaw Eh speaks Karen, Burmese, Thai and English. He lives in Hyrum, Utah.

Snay Tun is a 21-year-old student at Utah State University. He loves sports, especially soccer and takraw.

Eh Htoo is 32 years old. He works at JBS Swift in Hyrum, Utah, and he hopes to return home to Karen State one day. His wish is for peace and stability to return to his homeland and that awareness can be spread about refugee issues across the world.

Pyo Nwe is a 37-year-old wife and mother of five children. She speaks some English, but she would really like to learn enough to communicate on a daily basis.
