MISSION OF CACHE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT'S CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM

HONRS16group5-ChildrenatLunchTable.jpg

"Cache County School District school cafeterias have met tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed in school. Now is a great time to encourage your children to choose school lunch!

School meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in School Year 2015-2016, school lunches and breakfasts will meet additional standards requiring:

  • Age appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
  • More whole grains
  • Less sodium

We hope parents will support this effort by encouraging their students to give the healthier meals a try. Students are far more likely to pick a fruit or vegetable in the lunch line if they have been introduced to those foods at home. This fall, as students go through the lunch lines, they will be required to take at least ½ cup of fruit and/or vegetables with their meal." -- Mission Statement of the Cache County School District's School Lunch Program
