Mittens and Merrick Butte

Mittens and Merrick Butte.

Even though Dolph Andrus’s Monumental Highway Expedition showed that the automobile could be used to enter Monument Valley, it would be many years before the federal government constructed a highway through Monument Valley. Finally, Andrus's dream was realized when in 1970 the government constructed U.S. Route 163; its scenic route cuts through Monument Valley and connects Bluff, Utah and Kayenta, Arizona, permitting tourists to gaze upon the monuments that Andrus worked so hard to reach in a mere one hour and fifteen minute drive.
