“Fix the Road, the Tourists are Waiting.” Photos of Dolph Andrus’s Maxwell Automobile
Taking an early 1900s automobile into rugged terrain was not an easy task. At times, Dolph Andrus’s Maxwell automobile became stuck in the sand or could not make it up and over a steep bank. In one instance, the tire tubes were punctured and Andrus had to replace them. To overcome steep inclines, the group used a crank that Andrus referred to as “the pull-me-up.” Sometimes when the car could not continue, it received assistance from the original source of horsepower and manpower.
