Kurland became rabbi of Congregation Brith Sholem in August 1931. He graduated from University of Michigan and the Theological Seminary in New York.[1] Rabbi Kurland may have been the last rabbi the congregation supported due to financial struggles they faced because of the Great Depression. The congregation also had a decline in members during the 1930s. After his departure in fall 1931, weddings, funeral services, and other gatherings that required a rabbi were officiated by rabbis from congregations in Salt Lake City.
