Steven Emile, General Manager of the Island Market, reached out to Utah State University’s History Department in 2021 in hopes of getting some help uncovering the history of the Island Market. Aside from a few photographs and a paper check dated 1927, not many physical sources were known about.

Rebecca Andersen, a lecturer at USU, decided helping the Island Market explore its past would be a valuable project for the students of her Public History class the next spring and built it into the coursework. During spring semester 2022, eight undergraduate students were briefed on the project with Steven Emile coming in and providing a few names of former owners that he knew through conversations around the Island and some other starting research points.

And with the support of the Island Market, the students began their search. Research across USU’s Special Collections and Archives, Digital History Collections, and even visits to the Cache County Recorder’s Office took place. This unique class experience allowed students to learn from professional archivists, researchers, and historians, and apply those skills directly to a collaborative research project for the Logan community. The class culminated with a collection of written narratives and presentations to Steven Emile and the Dean of the Merrill-Cazier Library. These narratives and presentations were adapted into the text for this exhibit.
