Closing of Corner Markets
With several major retail centers making plans to open (including the Cache Valley Mall,[53] Smith’s, and Lee’s), many Logan corner markets began to close their doors, including Gerber's AG Market, Matthew's Market, and Skanchy’s Market.[54]

Additional Context
Some additional information on some of the closed stores is shared below. These are some of the markets that previous owners of the 400 East and Center Street building (later the Island Market) operated after they moved to other locations around Logan (such as “Cleve’s Foodland” and “McCann’s Market”). There is also information concerning “Temple Grocery” and “Skanchy’s Market,” which were owned by various members of the Skanchy family.
Skanchy's Market
As of 1946, Antone L. Skanchy owned Skanchy’s Market, a store at 426 North 500 East that provided groceries, meat, and cold storage lockers.[55]
Antone L. Skanchy would attempt many different expansions and ventures from Skanchy’s Market. By 1949, he had added a “food bar,” or restaurant, at the same location.[56] Lula K. Skanchy, Antone’s wife, was listed as the owner of the food bar in 1953. By 1955, they added a motel to their enterprise called the Redwood Lodge. By 1958, their business would move to 416 North 500 East. It seems to have downsized to simply be a “Drive in Market.” By 1959, the Skanchys revived the Redwood Lodge and were running it again at the same location as their market.[57]
Temple Grocery
As of 1946, C. Norman Skanchy owned Temple Grocery at 395 East 300 North.[58] Temple Grocery remained relatively static, as it kept the same address for at least a decade as shown in the images above. It seems to have been inherited first by C. Norman Skanchy’s widow, Addie T. Skanchy, and then by other relatives, William D. and Ruth R. Skanchy, after Norman’s death.[59]
McCann's Market
Like previous owners of the Island Market, the McCanns would go on to move their grocery business, first to 440 North Main Street by 1953[60] and then to 402 East 400 South by 1959, when they changed their store’s name to River Heights Market.[61] Logan does not currently have a River Heights Market still in operation today.
Cleve's Foodland
After leaving the location of the Island Market store, the Hansen family would go on to open another store, Cleve’s Foodland, by 1953.[62] Cleve’s Foodland was located on 58 West and Center Street in Logan.[63] This store would continue to operate through 1955, but it moved to 96 West 100 North sometime between 1956 and 1958, where it continued to operate through 1959.[64]
It is worth noting that while many corner stores operated and eventually closed during this period, the Island Market (400 East and Center Street) was the only location where a corner market successfully continued in its neighborhood setting.
