Bingham Copper Mine

Also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, it's a large open-pit mine near Salt Lake City.  While not the most glamorous of tourist spots, it can be seen how unique of a site it is.  Originally found in 1848 by the Bingham brothers, extraction of the ore didn't begin until 1863. Since then the mine has grown to over 0.6 miles deep and 2.5 miles wide and covers 1,900 acres.
