Jones and Johnston
The Reverend Jones and the Reverend Johnston were two of the most influential rectors of St. John's Episcopal Church, starting several of the most remembered traditions of the early twentieth century in the Episcopalian community of Logan.
Paul Jones, an athlete, and Donald Johnston, a scholar, led the congregation at St. John's toghether by developing services and policies that were advertised in their newsletter, The Portal.
The Portal was a way for Jones and Johnston to advocate for public waterworks, civic activity, and cooperation between different religious groups in support of college students.
Rev. Jones was an athletic man who had the goal to bring the different communities of Logan together by sponsoring sports clubs and being active. St. John's had the first public gymnasium in Logan, one in the style of a weight room and shower, in addition to the first tennis court.
One of the most often asked questions in the media or discussions on the history of St. John's is, "Have we found the showerhead yet?" The answer to that is sadly no. However, in the Paul Jones Reading Room, there are several pieces of original furniture from the early 1900s including a reading chair, doorknob, and some shelving.
